Convia and LEED® Certification

Green Building Design and Construction

LEED® is an internationally recognized certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) that measures how well a building or community performs across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. [1]

The Convia System addresses these metrics. That’s why the USGBC chose Convia to help meet and exceed the organization’s ongoing energy management goals in their new headquarters in Washington, D.C. and assist them in achieving a LEED® rating of Platinum, the highest level.

Convia may contribute up to 23 points toward LEED Certification.

LEED NC 2009 SUMMARY

Credit ID Pts Credit Name and Intent How Convia Can Help
Energy & Atmosphere Prerequisite 1 NA Fundamental Commissioning: Verify that the project’s energy-related systems are installed, calibrated and perform as intended. Comprehensive system queries and trending supported by Convia protocol bridge to BMS systems can help verify design compliance, system calibration and functional performance.
Energy & Atmosphere Prerequisite 2 NA Minimum Energy Performance: Demonstrate 10% improvement in energy efficiency within the proposed building over the minimum ASHRAE 90.1-2007 base building. Integrated automatic-off options, including building sweeps and occupancy sensing can support compliance with prescriptive and lighting control requirements of ASHRAE 90.1-2007
Energy & Atmosphere Credit 1 1-19 Optimize Energy Performance: Achieve increasing levels of energy conservation beyond the prerequisite standard to reduce environmental impacts associated with excessive energy use. (1-19 pts simulation, 1-3 pts prescriptive path) Convia provides a comprehensive suite of energy measurement and control options including: open- and closed-loop daylighting, central lighting management, and thermostat controls to help maximize and maintain energy efficiency levels.
Energy & Atmosphere Credit 2 1-7 On-Site Renewable Energy: Recognize increasing levels of on-site renewable energy self-supply to reduce environmental and economic impacts associated with fossil fuel use. Convia can provide integrated energy monitoring and reporting to verify on-site energy production and use.
Energy & Atmosphere Credit 5 3 Measurement and Verification: Provide for the ongoing accountability and optimization of tenant energy and water consumption performance over time. Convia integrates robust energy use and equipment operational monitoring to meet Option 1, (IPMVP option D, whole building metering and reporting) or Option 2 (IPMVP option B, ECM isolation).
Indoor Environmental Quality Credit 1 1 Outdoor Air Delivery Monitoring: Provide capacity for ventilation system monitoring to promote occupant comfort and well being. The Convia HVAC product can monitor and trend outside air flow meters and CO2 sensors in the system to provide feedback and alarms to occupants to comply with credit requirements.
Indoor Environmental Quality Credit 6.1 1

Controllability of Systems (Lighting): Provide a high level of lighting system control for individual occupants and groups in multi-occupant spaces to promote the productivity, comfort and well being of building occupants.

Web-based individual and workgroup lighting control screens are available for all zones on the Convia system to allow control of lighting for individual workstations and multi-occupant environments.
Indoor Environmental Quality Credit 6.2 1 Controllability of Systems (Thermal Comfort): Provide a high degree of thermal comfort control for individual occupants or groups in multi-occupant spaces. The Convia HVAC product can facilitate adjustment of thermostats and automated diffusers to give users individual control of their environment.
Indoor Environmental Quality Credit 7.2 1 Thermal Comfort (Verification): Provide for assessment of occupant thermal comfort over time. The Convia HVAC product can monitor and trend space temperature and humidity reported by sensors on the system to fulfill the permanent monitoring requirement.
Innovation & Design Credits 1.1-1.5 1-5 Provide design teams and projects the opportunity to be awarded points for exceptional performance above the requirements set by the LEED Rating System and/or innovative performance in Green Building categories not specifically addressed by the LEED Green Building Rating System. Provides design teams with a level of system capability and control flexibility that sparks innovation and creativity to achieve truly exceptional levels of performance.
Regional Priority Credits 1.1-1.4 1-4 Provide incentive for achievement of credits that address geographically specific environmental priorities. The Convia system can provide controls and monitoring to support regional credits as applicable for the project location.
